Emotions in the workplace - Essay Example Emotions play an important role not only in a personal life of a person but also in his social and professional life. Hence, people who know how to handle their emotions intelligently, tend to succeed in their personal and professional lives. However, for emotions to be handled intelligently, it is important to know the different concepts of emotions. Emotion recognition is one of the most important aspects of emotional intelligence. Emotions of a person affect his communication pattern to a great extent, as emotions not only influence the thinking pattern of a person but also influence the physiology of a person. The behavior of a person is a result of an emotional state that he is going through. Hence, different emotions create different types of physiological changes in human being (Barlow and Maul 2000). They create physical activities and impulses that motivate a person to behave in certain way (Frijda 1986). For example, if a person is sad, he will sit with slouched shoulders and if a person is feeling happy, he will communicate openly and will display pleasant expressions on his face. This shows that different emotions are accompanied with different body gestures and expressions. Hence, if one needs to know how a person is likely to behave or react, one should read the emotion related clues given in his body language (Barl ow and Maul 2000). The ability to read the emotional state of a person through physical clues is known as emotion recognition. According to Mayer et al. (1990), emotion recognition is an â€Å"accurate appraisal and expression of emotions in oneself and others† (Elfenbein, Marsh and Ambady 2002). Emotion recognition is the ability to perceive other people’s emotion. It has been found that it is easy to read emotions from facial expressions of a person than from any other body language clues. Jack’s Transformation in Jack and the Beanstalk Essay -- Jack and the

Jack and the Beanstalk – Jack’s Transformation  Ã‚  Ã‚      "Jack and the Beanstalk" is an example of a Buildungsroman. As the tale progresses, Jack evolves from an immature person into a mature, self-assertive person. While minor differences exist in various versions of the tale, such as those between Joseph Jacobs' and Horace Elisha Scudder's versions, the tale can always be read as Jack's quest for maturity. Some critics, however, analyze the tale as one in which Jack remains spoiled and immature. While they make points which support their claims, careful analysis of the tale will reveal that Jack's struggle to grow up and to achieve maturity is representative of the difficult process of adolescent (especially male) maturation and the process of adolescent socialization.            Some critics, as previously stated, maintain that Jack does not mature or learn any lesson during the tale. For example, Nell B. Byers writes that Jack is "a fellow who makes what would not be thought of as a prudent investment; who is not above trickery in outwitting the giant's wife; who steals the giant's treasures; and who, having killed the giant, lives with his mother happily ever afterward in affluence" (26). Byers' statement would lead one to believe that Jack does not change very much. Granted, a literal reading of most versions of the tale supports Byers' statements. Jack appears to be an immature, spoiled brat, or worse. Yet, a deeper reading is required to fully understand the tale's meaning.            Another critic, William Mayne, comments on Jack's lack of maturity and morality in Joseph Jacobs' version of "Jack and the Beanstalk." CAFS IRP Project Plan Essay

1. In your own words briefly explain what you understand is required for the Independent Research Task? It is expected that within our research task we answer/ create findings on a certain topic or question. We need to be interested in the topic in order for it to be a successful and fully finished research task. We are to use primary and secondary research methodologies and are to reference any work/ information that is not our own. For primary research we can use methodologies such as surveys, interviews and observations, and for our secondary research methods we can use literature review, news programmes, statistics etc. For most of this assessment we need to complete it in our own time, but we are also given much class time to formulate questions, hand in drafts, ask questions and work on our research plans individually. 2. Describe your research topic. Be specific as possible. After much deliberation I have chosen my topic, in which I am going to formulate my research task on, it is: What are the factors affecting body image amongst adolescents aged between 13 and 17? This will focus on how the 3 main factors are exposing adolescents to negative body images, these factors include: a) The Media b) Psychological c) Cultural 3. Which course topic areas is the focus of your IRP? Individuals and groups 4. Rewrite your topic area as a research questions i.e. A hypothesis / or statement? Adolescents aged 13- 16 body image interpretations of what is good and bad is influenced by three specific factors, they include psychological, cultural and the influence of the media. These specific factors are evident in both girls and boys. 5. Why are you interested in this topic? I believe that body image and the affects that it has on adolescents is a growing concern within today’s society. I have also known a person that has struggled with body image issues and had found herself in hospital many  times due to this. I find the idea of chasing unattainable perfection to be a mental focus that some people cannot break and I would find it intriguing to research the idea of body image from the perspective of 13 – 16 year old teenagers. 6. Outline the methodologies you hope to utilize for your IRP. Include literature review as a methodology. Explain why you are using each method. Literature Review To gain secondary data Insight into other findings on the topic Inspiration for any follow up questions that aren’t answered Surveys To gain an idea of perspective from adolescents aged 13 – 17 I can then use these surveys to compare different age categories Get more information on how important body image is to young people but also how it influences them Compare the information to see if it parallels secondary data Interviews I am planning to interview various workers from the retail industry to see what stories or experiences they have from the influence of the media and how it has affected their workplace 7. Who and where (people and organisations) do you hope to gather your primary data from? I plan on gathering my primary data from various sources, these include: Year 7 students at CCAS Year 10 students at CCAS I also plan to have open conversations and ask various open ended questions to school councillors to see whether they have ever had any cases where body image has been an issue. 8. List some resources (at least four) that you can use as secondary data. These will contribute to your literature review. These might include textbooks, newspapers, articles, websites, statistics etc. State how each one is relevant to your IRP. YOU MUST VARY YOUR SOURCES OF SECONDARY DATA. Don’t just use google! Identify any potential problem areas you think you may encounter? I believe that it may be hard to get the particular age category in which I have chosen to open up about their opinions and thoughts on the topic, because it can be one that is held quite close to them. I also believe that getting somebody to interview can be difficult, this is because counsellors may not want to or be allowed to display any information referring to a person currently at our school. 11. Any other comments? I think this is a very interesting task and it will be a challenge to make sure all information is conveyed correctly, but it is much more interesting than taking a test on research methodology because we are not just learning fact, we are putting that fact into practise in a real life situation.

Critical Analysis of Schulmans Article Gay Marriage and...

Marriage, for years has been argued that the rights to it or strictly only between a man and a women. Both sexes are assumed to marry someone of the opposite sex. What if, however, an individual wanted to marry someone of the same sex? Why is this debate so heavily heated amongst individuals? Is it that religion is a large structure base that those in society are guided by? Or is it that individuals do not understand that marriage is a union between two individuals who are in love? Whatever the case may be, there is always someone who has to argue that homosexual marriage is â€Å"wrong.† Sam Schulman argues that homosexual marriage is about the duties or roles that these couples perform that would be different from that of heterosexual†¦show more content†¦According to this logic, simply granting the right to homosexual couples to participate in a marriage will lead the legalization of other unconventional marriages. However, a knowledgeable person can see how ignorant this argument is. This argument is similar to the previously mentioned statement regarding homosexual marriage leading to incestuous relationships or marriages. Just because rights are granted to one group, does not mean something extreme such as the legalization of polygamy and others will then occur. The institution of homosexual marriage does not fight for the rights of one person to marry multiple people. Polygamy, polyandry, and polyamorism argue over the number of people allowed in a marriage. Legalizing and allowing homosexuals the right to marriage enables every American citizen access to equal rights as established by the Constitution. Polygamy and the like simply grant a different number of people allowed in the same committed circumstance. Schulman states marriage is an institution that is built around female sexuality and female procreativity and Thanks to contraception, the decision to marry no longer precedes sexual intercourse as commonly as it did 50 years ago, when, for most people, a fully
